Rasp snake

Rasp snakes are creatures of the Rain Wilds that live in the canopy. They are a kind of burrowing parasite with a behavior of something like a tick and something like a leech; these snakes begin by embedding their heads in the flesh of the victim, and eat their way inward. They are thin but long and very fast. They have an egg-tooth like feature on their snouts. When they attack an animal, they bite and hold on and then dig their head in to feed. There can be a great number of them feeding on one monkey and as the animal generally develops an infection, the result is often death.

Many of the dragons that emerge at Cassarick are plagued with rasp snakes as they journey toward Kelsingra.

One can not use fire to get rid of them, as they only dig deeper. Thymara's father had taught her to use whiskey instead. Mercor remembered them (or a similar but even worse species) as "burrowers".
