'''Elderling's''' are a race of people from the myths of the [[Six Duchies]], who, by looking at their ancient relics apprently possessed an abundance of [[Skill]].

== Appearance ==

Although the descriptions of their physical traits are never consistant, it is hinted at that the [[Ambassador]] mentioned in ''The Golden Fool'' is an Elderling (or, at least of Elderling ancestry), thus can be considered vaguely humanoid in appearance, almost how a dragon might look if it were human.

It has been speculated by [[The Fool]] that Elderling's were men and women who were priveledged enough for dragons to allow them to spent most of their lives near them, so much so that the two species became integrated, causing children that were not born often, but when they were, treasured. The dragons opinions on their young that showed human characteristics was not so positive, outcasting such offspring.

== Elderlings As Plot Points ==

The Elderlings are first mentioned through myths that [[Fitz]] is told as a child growing up, the most prominent mention of a tapestry that hung in his room for all of his time at [[Buckkeep]] showing King [[Wisdom]] greeting an Elderling.

They later play a much larger part in the [[Farseer trilogy]], with the finding of an Elderling map persuading King-In-Waiting [[Verity]] to go on a last resort quest to ending the [[Red Ship War]], which the Six Duchies was currently losing. He seemingly vanished, though it was later revealed by FitzChivalry that he ventured into long forgotten Elderling cities, using Elderling created [[Skill-pillar|Skill Stones]].

The jester of King [[Shrewd]], [[White Prophet]] to [[Fitz|Fitz's]] [[Catalyst]]. Named by his mother (and eventually by Fitz) as ''Beloved''.

The Fool was taken into the Royal Court at [[Buckkeep]] as an anomaly, his incredibly pale colouring and slender and flexible form marking him out as something unusual. He became devoted to King Shrewd, using his position close to the King to observe everything, often making cutting or blunt remarks that could be laughed away as a Jesters prattle.

While he kept himself away from most of the population of Buckkeep [and they, in turn were wary of him], he and Fitz formed a friendship, clumsy at first, but through the trilogies it grows into a bond above and beyond mere friends.

There is much debate about the sex of the Fool. While 'the Fool' protects his claim to masculinity throughout the first trilogy; his appearance as a woman called [[Amber]] in the Liveship books confuses the matter. There are also several good arguments for his being female made by [[Starling]] in the third [[Assassin]] book. However, when the Fool returns to Buckkeep in later books, it is in the guise of another male, [[Lord Golden]].

Generally, 'the Fool' and 'Lord Golden' are given masculine pronouns - and 'Amber' is given feminine - as it is recognised that all three 'characters', though tecnhically the same person, are distinct facets of the character as a whole.

Amber is the guise under which [[The Fool]] operated in Bingtown during the events of the Liveship Traders trilogy. She was instrumental in the raising of the [[Liveship]] [[Paragon]], as well as helping [[Althea Vestrit]] out when she first ran away from her home.

Surprisingly, this guise chosen by The Fool is female, thus raising doubts over The Fools gender.

The Fool drops this guise when he returned to the [[Six Duchies]] during the events of the Tawny Man trilogy. However he (or she) stepped into the guise of Amber again when a former shipmate, [[Jek]], pays a visit. The transformation is so complete it raised more questions concerning The Fool.

One of [[The Fool]]s' three known guises. The Fool hid as Lord Golden during the time he was browning, and also so that he could wander around [[Buckkeep]] without being regarded upon as more than another Lord rather than the late King [[Shrewd]]s jester.

Lord Golden helped the crown in the first parts of the [[Piebald Rebellion]].

[[Skilled]] King of the [[Six Duchies]] during the early life of [[Fitz]]. Son of [[Bounty]] Farseer. Married twice: first with [[Constsance]] (children [[Chivalry]] and [[Verity]]) and then with [[Desire]] (child [[Regal]]).
Insisted on bringing Fitz to Buckkeep and later persuaded [[Chade]] Fallstar to train Fitz in the ways of an assassin.

Killed by [[Justin]] and [[Serene]] in [[Royal Assassin]]. They sucked the life out of him through their use of the skill.
