Unlike the other keepers, Tats is not Rain Wild Trader born, but born into slavery as one of the [[Tattooed]]. He comes to the Rain Wilds with his mother, who dies shortly afterward. [[Thymara]]'s father employs him in their family hunting and gathering business from a young age, and he and Thymara have a long-standing friendship.

Early in the expedition to find [[Kelsingra]], Tats has a romantic relationship with [[Jerd]]. This puts some strain on his friendship with Thymara.

His relationship with Fente is relatively easy. He accepts the challenges she puts before him. With Thymara, [[Sylve]] and occasionally [[Rapskal]], Tats helps care for a [[Relpda|copper]] and [[Spit|silver]] dragon who are left keeperless, there being insufficient keepers for the number of dragons.

During his [[Elderling]] changes, his scales simply enhance the traits of his skin, including the tattoo on his face. It appears that Fente admires Tats for who he his, and seeks to enhance the physical appeal she sees in him.

Tats makes his feelings for [[Thymara]] known in [[Dragon Haven]], but Thymara is wary of sleeping with him in case she falls pregnant. Tats expresses jealousy of other young men, especially [[Rapskal]], who pay attention to Thymara.

Like Thymara, he has a strong dislike for [[Greft]].

Carson's nephew is [[Davvie]], who has accompanied him on the [[Tarman]] expedition as a hunter.

In [[Dragon Haven]], it becomes apparent that Carson has feelings for Sedric, and they later form a relationship together.

Jess tries to talk Sedric into helping him kill and cut up the dragon, but Sedric fights him, and the dragon ultimately eats Jess.

I'm not at all sure it was Patience's idea to move to Withywoods etc. From all the clues scattered around the books, it seems to me to be the influence of Queen Desire/Regal (maybe even Galen too, even though this is early). Regal remarks several times how "my mother the queen" doesn't approve of Fitz and Chivalry's eccentric wife etc etc. It has always seemed to me Fitz was the perfect excuse to move Regal up a notch in the order of inheritance. Besides, Patience may feel jealous, but she has no reason to be angry or feel betrayed, as Fitz was conceived BEFORE their marriage. Thoughts? --[[User:Mervi|Mervi]] 09:22, 3 August 2010 (UTC)

He is hurt by Hest's punishment but determined to find a way to build a life for the two of them where they can live freely. Sedric connects with a [[Chalced]]ean and makes a deal to gather dragon parts, for which the [[Duke of Chalced]] will pay handsomely.

Sedric is initially incapable of hearing the [[dragon]]s' thought communication, and compares dragon noises to the moo of a cow, which the dragon [[Sintara]] finds offensive. He continues to think of the dragons as rather ungainly animals, and builds a stash of scales and flesh from helping [[Thymara]] and [[Sylve]] work on the keeperless [[Spit|silver dragon]]'s injured tail.

One night he sees an opportunity: the keeperless [[Relpda|copper dragon]] is ill and sleeping. He creeps over to her and steals scales, then blood. Without really understanding what drives him, he drinks a large amount of her blood, planting the seeds for forming a bond with the dragon.

Initially the blood makes him sick, and while he lies fevered in his cabin, [[Jess]] ferrets out his secret store of dragon parts.

Sedric begins to build a stronger connection with the dragon. At the same time, he slowly comes to accept that Hest never loved him, and for the first time, he fully acknowledges how cruel and sadistic Hest is.

After the flood, when he defeats [[Jess]]'s attempt to kill the copper dragon, [[Carson]] comes looking for him. He and Carson begin to build a more loving relationship. He reveals his relationship with [[Hest]] to [[Alise Kincarron|Alise]], and begs her forgiveness.

Eventually as his bond with [[Relpda]] grows in strength, he continues to help the dragon, resulting in her choosing to begin his transformation into an [[Elderling]]. Relpda sees his theft of her blood as his desire to become closer to her, and expresses quite clearly to him that his nearness makes it easier for her to think and express herself.

Sedric makes an effort to take his own life, but Relpda sends Carson to save him.

Near the end of [[Dragon Keeper]], [[Sedric Meldar]] takes scales and blood from the copper dragon, with the aim of selling them to the [[Duke of Chalced]]. However, he is strangely driven to drink some of the blood. He packs what he has stolen and mentally congratulates himself.

== Dragon Haven ==

Sedric lies ill for several days after drinking the blood and the dragon's thoughts begin to intrude into his mind. She doesn't hate Sedric for taking her blood, but instead is protective of him. He begins to change into an [[Elderling]].

While Sedric is ill, so is the dragon. She is guarded by [[Mercor]], who senses she may die. She nearly succumbs to parasites, and the keepers rescue her from an infestation of [[Rasp snakes]]. Mercor shares her name, Relpda, with the group, and watches over her while she heals.

After the massive flood takes them away from [[Tarman]], Sedric and Relpda are dependent on each other to survive. When [[Jess]] tries to kill Relpda, Sedric fights him off, and Relpda eats the hunter. They are eventually found by [[Carson]], who leads them back to the Tarman.

Later Relpda becomes distressed when Sedric tries to take his own life, and she warns Carson to save him in time. Relpda confesses that she knows Sedric took her blood, but she has forgiven him, and is happy for Sedric to be her keeper, and to help his change into an Elderling.

Jerd is a physically strong, solidly built young woman who is a reliable caretaker for Veras.

During the journey, Jerd acts careless of the traditional [[Rain Wilds]] rule against those heavily touched by the Rain Wilds that denies them the right to mate and have children. After sleeping with several of the young men in the camp, she becomes pregnant. The father of her child is not known for certain, but [[Greft]] claims it to prevent any fights and to, as he says, keep her under control.

Eventually the child is stillborn, which might be revealing of what happens to partially formed Elderlings becoming pregnant, as the child is not human nor Elderling, but is rather half human, half [[serpent]]. The child's malformations could also be attributed to the perils of the Rain Wilds.

Among the original dragon keepers, he is the oldest and the one most heavily marked by the [[Rain Wilds]].

Early on he fashions himself the leader of the keepers, but does not really succeed, since not all are willing to follow him. His methods are proven by his actions to be motivated selfishly; on one occasion he steals the credit for [[Thymara]]'s hunted elk, and when the keepers lose most of their equipment in a storm, he does not share what remains to him.

Greft eventually pairs off with his fellow dragon keeper [[Jerd]], with whom he has slept numerous times, and it is possible that he is the father of her miscarried child. Even though he feels some uncertainty on this point himself, Greft claims the unborn child as his own, in what he expresses to some of his fellows as an effort to keep the peace among the other keepers.

Greft's methods of "leadership" offend [[Thymara]]. He urges her several times to choose a mate; Thymara feels strongly that she will select her own mate, if she chooses one at all, rather than decide based on what Greft argues is best for the group.

The hunter [[Jess]] brings Greft around to thinking that dragon parts should be sold, which causes the dragons to take a strong dislike to him.

Eventually, Greft tries to demand blood from [[Kalo]], which prompts his dragon to revoke his keeper status. Without the guidance of Kalo, the changes within his body begin to kill him. Though no conclusive evidence has been given to support it, it is quite possible that [[Kalo]], or another [[dragon]], intentionally made Greft's changes deadly after the revocation.

Greft tries to escape, and steals [[Sedric Meldar]]'s vials of dragon blood along with a substantial portion of the travellers' supplies from [[Tarman]], in the hopes of returning to [[Trehaug]] and selling them. Sedric and [[Carson]] follow him, and find that he has been fatally attacked by a [[gallator]]. His body is surrounded by Sedric's empty vials; the dragon parts did not save him from death.

Thymara, born with claws and deemed unfit to live by [[Rain Wilds]] standards, is saved by her father, despite her mother's disapproval of his act. Their only child to survive, she is raised as a hunter and gatherer in the canopy of the Rain Wild forest. She is resourceful and works well with her father, and her father's helper [[Tats]].

She witnesses the dragons emerging from their cocoons at [[Cassarick]] and can understand them immediately. She is full of sympathy for their malformations but admires them all the same.

When she is offered a position as a dragon keeper, she persuades her father that the experience will be good for her; as someone so deeply changed by the Rain Wilds, she will not be allowed to marry, and she perceives this opportunity will allow her to have a life of her own.

When she joins the keepers, she first believes they are all friends and she has found a place she can call her own. As the story progresses she learns that the web of relationships is more complex and difficult.

Her close friends are [[Tats]], [[Sylve]] and [[Rapskal]]. These three take on the task of caring for the [[Relpda|two]] [[Spit|dragons]] who are left without keepers, in addition to caring for their own.

Thymara has a tense opposition with [[Greft]]. She at first perceives him as self-serving, which is borne out when Greft claims he killed an elk that she had hunted herself. She is further uncomfortable with Greft's desire to pair off the keepers and is insulted by his suggestions that she should choose a mate in order to keep the peace. Thymara prefers to make such decisions for herself. She similarly rejects Greft's posturing as leader of the keepers.

Unique among the keepers, Thymara has a rather tumultuous relationship with her dragon, with them both professing dislike of each other at numerous time. She eventually forms a tenuous friendship with [[Alise Kincarron]], who seems to have an easier time responding to the dragon's glamour. Thymara feels uneasy about the dragon's charm, and knowing it for a glamour reacts by walling off her emotions and simply caring for her in a practical way.

When the blue dragon she selects to keep will not reveal her name, Thymara names her "Skymaw" after a beautiful but deadly Rain Wild flower. Later, [[Mercor]] reveals her name is [[Sintara]], much to the blue dragon's ire.

When seeing her in the [[stone quarry]], [[the Fool]] felt sorry for her and started carving out the Stone-dragon with his [[Skill]]-touched fingers. After [[Fitz]] helped him by putting some of his memories in the Stone-dragon, Girl-on-a-Dragon came to being and finally flew away with [[Verity-as-Dragon]] to end the [[Red Ship War]]. He also carried the Fool on her back out of the quarry.

After the flight to end the Red Ship Wars Girl-on-a-Dragon came to rest in the [[Stone Garden]], along with the other stone dragons.

Later the Fool flew on her to [[Aslevjal]] in exchange for giving the [[Rooster Crown]] to her. Girl-on-a-Dragon returned Fitz's memories to him via the Fool when the Rooster Crown was given to her.

Note: At the end of [[Assassin's Quest]], Fitz and the Fool both think one of the completed stone dragons in the garden was Realder's dragon. By the end of [[Fool's Fate]], though, it has become clear that Girl-on-a-Dragon is the one Realder gave his life to.

However, she eventually wins the hearts of several of the royal soldiers when she rides into battle during the [[Red Ship War]]; [[Foxglove]] becomes the leader of the Queen's Guard and proudly wears the Vixen Badge.

Fitz makes every effort to help her fit in and becomes her friend, which eventually makes her a threat in [[Regal]]'s eyes. At Fitz's suggestion she embarks on a project to restore the [[Queen's Garden]], but her ideas of gardening differ wildly from the lush greenery traditional to the Six Duchies. Her life and unborn child are threatened when [[Rosemary]] smears lamp-black on the long stair to the tower where the garden sits, but she survives.

[[Regal]] tries to use Kettricken as a pawn in his struggle to defeat Verity for the throne. After the death of King [[Shrewd]], [[Chade]] and the [[Fool]] spirit the pregnant Queen away from the vicious Regal, although Regal succeeds in hampering their progress. Kyle also removes Ephron's first mate [[Brashen Trell]], a social outcast who Ephron redeemed, from Vivacia's crew, and soon makes his plans known to make Vivacia a slaver ‚Äî to Althea and the rest of the family's horror, as a liveship will not tolerate so much human suffering. Keffria and Ronica begin to question their course to install Kyle as captain, despite Kyle's assurances he will treat his slaves gently.

Althea is a longtime friend of the liveship [[Paragon]], who she first met as a little girl.

== Appearance ==

Althea is petite and slender, and bears a striking resemblance to her nephew Wintrow. She has dark hair, skin rather tanned from much time aboard ship, and wears a wizardwood charm shaped like a skull at her navel to prevent conception.

== Adulthood ==

After Kyle kicks her off Vivacia, Althea vows to get her ship back. She flees home and with help from [[Amber]] disguises herself as a ship's boy named "Athel Vestrit," and works her way through a voyage on a seal-hunting ship, the [[Reaper]]. On that voyage she meets again with Brashen, who does his best to protect her and to help her be a good sailor without being obvious; there is tension between them as well as friendship. She proves very efficient at skinning the animals and packing the meat, and wins the respect of the captain.

When at the end of the first voyage Althea asks for her ship's ticket and reveals her true identity, the Captain kicks her off the ship without pay for her deception, and for being a woman.
