Lord Elkwin was a holder of the tiny fief of Tower Rock in Farrow and a follower of the Piebald Prince. He wounded Lord Ulder in a fair fight over a quarrel of words. Lord Ulder died a week later from an infected wound, and it was rumoured that Elkwin's blade had had poison on it. A vicious circle of revenge followed, which resulted in Lord Elkwin's Wit-bonded horse being killed. When Lord Curl's daughter was found slain in the stall where the horse had died, it was claimed Elkwin must be the murderer. However King Charger announced there would be no charges against him as there was no clear evidence.
