Maulkin was a male sea serpent. The leader of his tangle, he was also called Maulkin the Gold because of his golden false-eyes that ran the length of his entire body. He grew restless while the other serpents in his tangle were content to stay in the warm waters where feeding was easy. However, when Maulkin announced that the time had come for them to migrate, his tangle initially followed him towards the north.

The only two members of his original tangle who stayed loyally with him were Shreever and Sessurea, but he later gathered an enormous tangle of almost 200 serpents before trying to enter the Rain Wild River. Maulkin himself was one of the reduced numbers of sea serpents who survived that journey and were able to produce a cocoon. He emerged as the dragon Mercor.
