In the years when Fitz was young, the west gate of Buckkeep castle had been kept secure at most times and the road that led from it had been little more than a goat-path. After the Red Ship War when the trade prospered in Buckkeep town, the road had been widened and even rerouted in parts, and the gate stood open with a small manned guardhouse next to it.
